The past few months I haven’t been blogging on this weblog, because I moved my activities to the blog http://davidsdailydosage.wordpress.com.

During my recent holiday I decided to give this weblog a new purpose. I hope to post some blogs every now and then about my journey through the digitial world. Hope to catch you soon!

No blogging lately

It’s more than a month ago since my last blog.

Oops! I terribly regret it, but sometimes a man has to set his priorities straight! And in this case I had other priorities.

Lately I have been thinking what to do with this blog. I have started this, because I wanted to write about my spiritual journey. And I thought about writing about that in long articles. But now I have experienced that I don’t have the time to write long articles in a nice frequency.

Therefore I decided to start a new blog: http://davidsdailydosage.wordpress.com. The purpose of that blog is to keep you up-to-date about my daily thoughts, but then in small posts. I will put up Bible texts that I feel encouraged with, or things that are on my mind, quotes from other people etc.

Every now and then I will try to write a longer article on this blog, about where my journey through life is taking me and what I think of things in the light of my faith in God.

The Almighty Series

Evan Almighty with the Real Almighty

My wife and I are leaders of a teens small group. This weekend we started a series of evenings with the title “The Almighty Series”. Last night we watched the movie “Evan Almighty”. In the weeks to come we want to explore the theme of the movie, talk about differences between the movie and the story of Noah as told in the Bible and other things that we can extract from the movie.

If anyone reads this post and has an idea, feel free to write your ideas to me. You can do that in the Comments section of this post. If we use your idea, we will certainly let you know how it went!

What is church?

Wijkertoren in BeverwijkLately I have been thinking and reading a lot about the church. It seems that people can’t quite agree on how to define church.

Now, I don’t want to say that I have all wisdom, so I can come up with the definitive definition. But I thought it would be nice to start a discussion and see where we end up.

It’s also a nice test to see if people are actually reading this blog and if they are, if they want to comment. Maybe I will be only one discussing this, but then I will discuss this topic with me, myself and I :-) .

If you would like anything to comment, please comment to this post and I will react on your comments in later posts, copying the comments from this post.

Have fun!

Christian myth (5)

At the start of the weekend, here’s another christian myth to be unfolded: The offering of Cain and Abel. In our children’s Bibles the way God showed he accepted Abels offering was because the smoke coming from his offering went upwards. On the contrary Cains offering was denied and the way God showed that in that the smoke coming from his offering went sideways.

Let’s look at the original text in Genesis 4: “In the course of time Cain brought to the Lord an offering of the fruit of the ground, and Abel also brought of the firstborn of his flock and of their fat portions. And the Lord had regard for Abel and his offering, but for Cain and his offering he had no regard. So Cain was very angry, and his face fell. The Lord said to Cain, “Why are you angry, and why has your face fallen? If you do well, will you not be accepted? And if you do not do well, sin is crouching at the door. Its desire is for you, but you must rule over it.” (ESV, emphasis mine)

So, actually the original text doesn’t say if and if so, how God showed his acceptance of Abels offering and denial of Cains offering. Nice he?

I hope this series of posts is helping. If you have any other myth that you want me to write about, you can put a comment in one of the posts in the series “Christian myths”. Just give me the applicable Book, chapter and verse and I’ll write something about it.

 Cheers!

Bruce Cockburn quote

Today I listened to an interview from Canadian radio-host Drew Marshall with singer-songwriter Bruce Cockburn. It’s a rather old interview from somewhere in 2004.

Here’s an interesting quote from Mr. Cockburn: “Once you put spirituality in the center of your life, then everything that happens to you impacts on your spiritual journey and vice versa”.

I thought this quote belonged on my weblog, because this is what I am looking for, wanting, longing for, I don’t know what the best description is. This is also what I meant before with the supernatural. No further comments.

Ill

Unfortunately I have been ill for more than a week. That’s why I haven’t been posting anything.

Christian myth (4)

OK, here’s quick one, this one will be familiar to most of you:

What did Adam and Eve eat when they committed the first sin ever? (rapapa, rapapa, rapapa).

 Waah, we don’t know!

I bet some of you would say: an apple.

Now let’s look at the actual Biblical text:

“3:1 Now the serpent was more crafty than any other beast of the field that the Lord God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God actually say, ‘You shall not eat of any tree in the garden’?” And the woman said to the serpent, “We may eat of the fruit of the trees in the garden, but God said, ‘You shall not eat of the fruit of the tree that is in the midst of the garden, neither shall you touch it, lest you die.’” But the serpent said to the woman, “You will not surely die. For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate, and she also gave some to her husband who was with her, and he ate. Then the eyes of both were opened, and they knew that they were naked. And they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves loincloths.” (Gen. 3, ESV, emphasis mine).

So, the Bible doesn’t specify which kind of fruit it was! It might have been an apple, but it might as well not!!!

I have lots of inspiration on new posts, not only on christian myths. So, keep coming back to this weblog!

(too late!) Christmas myth

iMonkToday I stumbled upon a post on one of my favorite weblogs, www.internetmonk.com on the legends/myths surrounding Christmas.

Michael Spencer has written a very complete post on every legend surrounding Christmas. So, even though Christmas is already a week ago, I feel the freedom to link to this post: http://www.internetmonk.com/archive/religion-reporters-do-love-their-christmas-legends/

Please read the post, but don´t hesitate to scroll around on this marvelous site. It´s really great!

In search of me

I am nearly through reading Brennan Manning’s book “Abba’s Child” (Kind aan Huis). It’s a wonderful book that gives me much to think about. If I had more time I would write a complete book review, but now I want to post one quote I read yesterday evening:

(I have read this in Dutch and tried to translate this to English, but it might differ from the original English text) “According to Viktor Frankl a person finds his identity only to the extent that “he commits himself to something that is outside of himself, to a goal that is greater than himself.”*  The meaning of our life results from our dedication to an adventure wherein we discover how we are going to become what we not are yet.”

In my journey I am also trying to find out who I am, especially in the light of what God says that I am. This quote really helps me.
